Why Is Change So Difficult? And How To Go Beyond It.

Why Is Change So Difficult? And How To Go Beyond It.

Change, Negative, Positive

Homeostasis, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica, any self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival.

So in layman terms, a human has this tendency to find stability for survival. For example, our body uses hundreds of complex processes, feedback loops, pressure mechanism to attain a state of equilibrium or homeostasis for our good health.

Like the body, our mind also plays the same trick to maintaining an equilibrium of our habits. So that we do things that we are comfortable with over a period of time.

Suddenly, one fine day when we think of changing some of our old habits for something good or better. That moment, we realize that the equilibrium we developed over a period of time is so strong that it resists and our system is motivated to restore equilibrium.

Though we get motivated by many celebrities, leaders, and speakers when we listen to them, read them or watch them. We always come across phrases like “Massive success demands massive action” and “Set big goals, think big and start big with life-altering plans.” These phrases are highly inspiring, therefore, we start changing things rapidly, start taking massive action and end up with massive roadblocks, drain out of energy and we tend to realize that we are not able to match up with our expectations and get frustrated after taking the road for a while.

This happens because we are by design adjusting our systems to reach our equilibrium that we are used to. When we take massive action, stepping outside our normal boundary, all our internal forces pull us back to our equilibrium.

Almost all who have tried to make big changes in life must have experienced some of this. George Leonard says “Resistance is proportionate to the size and speed of the change, not to whether the change is a favorable or unfavorable one.”

So what is the way out? How can we make big changes in life?

Of course, change is possible any many people making big changes in their life. We have hundreds and thousands of inspiring stories around us. They are the example of positive change.

Change is certain however to make it sustainable, we have to start small, take baby steps, get into a systematic approach.

A big step with instant motivation is not sustainable most of the time. Therefore, taking one step at a time, going for small wins, making small-small changes break the equilibrium slowly and build new habits gradually. With these small changes, we establish a big change in life.

So we have to develop a system, a path that teaches us or make way for small changes, small wins that’s sustainable and results in big change with time. For example, practicing gratitude, it’s such a subtle process that shows magical results once it becomes a part of your daily life. Because, with gradual practice, it becomes part of your daily life’s equilibrium at a natural pace.

So change is a continuous process that requires daily efforts for a long period of time so that it slowly replace the old equilibrium of habits into a new equilibrium of winning habits.

So Dream Big, Start Small. Focus on your daily wins that accumulate into the big. Everything in life is possible, we just have to approach it right.

We wish you success with your winning habits.
